xAI Grok Imagine Joins Image Lab Through OpenRouter

Image Lab can now route image generation and reference-image edits through xAI Grok Imagine Image Quality on OpenRouter. Use it when you need fast poster, ad, packaging, menu, or social graphics with cleaner text rendering and stronger named-entity handling than the default path.

What you can do

• Pin xAI per Image Lab call. Set provider: "xai" to use x-ai/grok-imagine-image-quality; leave the provider at auto or gemini for the existing Gemini / Nano Banana Pro 2 path.
• Generate text-to-image outputs at 1K or 2K. xAI's image model supports 1K/2K across the normal Image Lab aspect-ratio set. If you ask for 4K, Alfrada submits 2K and surfaces a warning.
• Edit with reference images. operation: "edit" plus source_images sends those images as references to xAI, then saves the returned image into the session out/ folder like every other Image Lab result.
• Keep provider transparency. xAI responses return provider: "xai" and engine: "openrouter:x-ai/grok-imagine-image-quality" so Alfred can tell you which model actually rendered the file.
• Continue using Higgsfield fallback. Gemini moderation fallback to Higgsfield Soul remains unchanged and still reports fallback_triggered_by when it happens.

Where this shows up

You need a launch poster with readable headline text. Before, Image Lab defaulted to Gemini and text-heavy layouts could be hit-or-miss. Now you can pin xAI for poster, packaging, menu, and social ad work.

You want a brand or public-location variant. xAI's model page advertises stronger named-entity rendering for brands, public figures, and locations, so it is the better first pick when that fidelity matters.

You want to keep the old behavior. Do nothing: provider: "auto" still uses the default Gemini path unless you explicitly ask for xAI.

Heads up

xAI's ability to render named entities is a model capability, not legal clearance. For third-party franchises, copyrighted characters, or protected brand assets, use descriptive homage language unless you own or have rights to the IP.
